Hillside believes firmly that a child’s ability to read is central to their success in broader life. In line with this, the Academy adopts a clear Early Reading policy which includes regular, systematic synthetic phonics lessons in line with the Letters and Sounds strategy. We expect children to read for at least three times a week, ideally with a parent or trusted adult and we provide a Reading Record for this to be recorded in. At Hillside we want to create a love of reading, and have a half termly ‘Reading Challenge’. Please ask your child’s teacher for more information.
There is a daily reading lesson at Hillside for all children – this could include group reading, whole-class reading, reciprocal reading, phonics or independent reading. There is a regular focus on the development of comprehension skills.
