On Wednesday 18th November, the whole school took part in a maths focus day on Fractions. Every class in school have carried out lots of activities towards the year group objectives for the National Curriculum.
Kingfishers and Woodpeckers have been looking at finding half and a quarter of a shape. The children were so good that they wanted to extend their learning to finding 3/4 and even 1/3 or 2/3 of a shape. We then had a game of fraction bingo to consolidate our learning from the morning. In the afternoon the children used their knowledge of fractions to start fining 1/2 and 1/4 of an amount. At first they found it tricky but by the end of the afternoon they were able to all find a fraction of an amount. Even our reception children had a go at finding 1/2 of an amount.
Puffins class have thoroughly enjoyed fractions day! Our day started by looking at how fractions are represented. We split up plates to represent different fractions and we looked at which fractions were equivalent. Then we solved addition and subtraction calculations with fractions and showed our working out using whiteboards and cubes. Finally, we looked very closely at boxes of celebrations! We worked out how to share them equally between our class and what fraction of the chocolates we would each get.
Skylarks used Lego to show different types of fractions. They then extended their learning by learning how to add and subtract fractions with the same and different denominators. After lunch we used pizza plates to find equivalent fractions and different ways of making a whole! After that we used smarties to find what fractions of each colour were in each pack! Lastly, we played fractions relay where we worked in teams to answer different fractions reasoning questions!
